Important deliberations are happening at the United Nations (U.N.) and within the European Union (EU) that could affect your business. These discussions and proposed actions could mean changes in how the Internet's critical infrastructure is governed. ICANN is pleased to be hosting a comprehensive briefing on these happenings featuring members of its Government and Intergovernmental Organizations Engagement (GE) team.

At present, there are three processes at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that you should keep an eye on. The Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) just finished its work and published a report, and the new Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) is starting a 4-year process to discuss cybersecurity, while at the same time the Open-Ended Ad-Hoc Committee of Experts (AHC) is on the edge of starting to draft a new U.N. cybercrime convention. Only member-states are going to decide the outcome of these discussions, so it is vital that diplomats have all the information and knowledge necessary to craft sound policy. The OEWG and the GGE recently adopted their respective consensus reports; the AHC just had its organizational session, and a new OEWG held its organizational session on 1 June.

In Europe, a new landscape has emerged after the passing of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Registries and registrars are already navigating this new reality, but what else is happening that could affect the space? In addition to GDPR, there are legislative proposals currently under negotiation that are presenting new challenges for ICANN’s contracted parties, including the proposals for a revised Directive on Security of Network and Information Systems (NIS2 Directive) and a Digital Services Act Regulation (DSA Regulation).

ICANN’s GE team will explain these developments, and their potential impact on the Domain Name System, providing you with a sense of what can be expected in the near future.

Join us for this important briefing on Tuesday 20 July 2021 at 12pm EDT/9am PDT/ 4 pm UTC. Please register to receive the Zoom information. All stakeholders, regardless of whether they are an ICANN contracted party, are welcome to attend. We look forward to seeing you!
