"ICANN, the Internet, and Geopolitics: A UK perspective." from the ICANN Stakeholder Assembly Webinar Series.
A number of geo-political events -- ranging from war, to debates at Intergovernmental organizations, to legislative proposals around the world -- threaten the Internet's successful multistakeholder governance model. This in turn might impair the stability and connectivity of the Internet itself. Will we connect the next billion Internet users, or do we risk fragmentation? The United Kingdom has long recognized the importance of the global Internet to its economy and society. What developments should UK stakeholders be following, and how can we insure continued success?
Goran Marby, ICANN CEO, and Kaoutar Abousmir, Head of the Digital Standards & Internet Governance at the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) will discuss events of the day, the UK response to them and ICANN’s efforts to raise awareness among stakeholders worldwide They will be joined by Nigel Hickson, Senior Policy Adviser at DCMS and Elena Plexida, VP Government Engagement at ICANN to share their view of the geo-political landscape. They will share ICANN's technical advice, and discuss the interplay between technical governance of the Internet and diverse governmental initiatives.
